Equilibria in Kuwait – End of trip report by Bob Josch
Equilibria continues to work with each crew in attempt to provide reflective experiences for individual’s on how they can take personal ownership of the E-Colors program.
This week we provided E-Colors stand up training for the new crew returning to Rig 102. We also made presentations at the safety meetings for Rig 102 and Rig 17.
We have also shifted some of our focus from group facilitation to finite, direct coaching with key individuals on each crew. For example Rig 17 was preparing for an afternoon casing job. Before lunch I spent time with the driller and the tour pusher for that crew. Individually, we discussed E-Colors and how they believe their colors are represented in their behavior. I then coached them on integrating E-Colors into the JSA that would be performed for the aforementioned casing job. My coaching was deliberate and brief. I simply suggested that they ask questions and listen to the answer. Both individuals took the coaching and the JSA meeting featured animated conversations about E-Colors.
We have spent some dedicated time making observations and coaching crew members at Rig 171. Since they are the newest rig in the JO family, we have tried to be very visible and assist where possible. In one instance we observed the drill crew while they were picking up pipe and tripping in the hole. During that time we would offer coaching on body mechanics, or acknowledge them for safe practices. At one point I had a great conversation with the driller on the best way to approach each member of his crew based upon E-Color’s. (It is not hard in this case because his entire drill crew is G/B). Our intention here is to stay out of the way yet make ourselves part of the fabric of the rig.
We will attend the first safety meeting for Rig 171 on August 30. I will work with the DSM and Tool pusher to come up with a series of topics for each week’s meeting, based upon the needs of the rig. These will be short sessions aimed to reinforce the safety culture at JO and address specific issues that have been observed. Even after I leave on September 8, Kirby Ganelo, Almansoori safety contractor, will be available to make presentations on these topics.
We have completed training with safety champions for Rig 17, Emmanuel Perez and Rig 102, Henry Labo. I have provided each man a file box filled with the E-Colors PDI in each language, copies of the IFO E-Colors Tallybook and a supply of hard hat decals. As a back-up, all of this information has also been given to each man in electronic format and stored on his computer. This will enable these champions and their reliefs, to assist new rig members or service partners to determine their E-Colors. These gentlemen are also proficient in the E-Colors technology and have a working knowledge of our practices. So they can explain the meaning of the colors after they take the PDI.

We have also spent a lot of time working on leadership. In order to continue this cultural change the program has to be generated organically, from within. Our safety champions are the “tip of the sword” for our E-Colors initiative on the rigs every day. When I am gone on days off, they will work to continue integrating E-Colors into conversation every day on their respective rigs. Please support these dedicated employees in their efforts.
I would like to thank and acknowledge Efren S. Nabor, who is the painter on Rig 102. Many of you may have a stylized name decal for your hard hat that is a product of Efren’s talent and generosity. Last week Efren excitedly asked me to examine the welcome sign for Rig 102. Efren created a large decal of the Equilibria colors logo showing all four colors. He asked Mr. Turfa, the tool pusher for permission to place this decal on the sign for rig 102. Mr. Turfa agreed and Efren proudly showed me his handiwork. He also made me three more decals for the signs at Rigs 16, 17 and 171 and the Tool pusher for 17 and 171 has enthusiastically said “yes” when I asked them if we could put this logo on their sign. Throughout the world in Chevron that logo is a symbol of the company’s commitment to the safety of its employees. Efren’s generous gift is a symbol that as JO carries on that commitment, the employee’s are accepting and appreciative. I have attached a photo of Efren and the logo, if you see him on the rig tell him thank you.
The best way we forward our E-Colors program, and therefore strengthen our culture of safety is to first of all always set the example. We should always follow our 10 Tenets of Operation and look for ways to encourage others to do the same. Secondly, wherever you can, discuss or display E-Colors. I believe that whenever we actively discuss or display E-Colors we are actively promoting our safety process. This is one way that we can ensure each and every employee goes home safely to his family, his life unaffected by his job.
I will update the DE’s and Drilling Superintendent on our RPJ at my end of trip report. If any of the DE’s are planning to visit the rig please let me know, I would like to do a “walk about” with you.
Thank you for your partnership in assisting each member of JO in realizing their potential.
